Seal the Marble: Applying a good-quality marble sealer is the first process you should undergo when installing your marble. This forms a shield which limits the penetration of stains on the surface of the stones. The frequency of re-sealing may vary depending on the type of marble and how heavily it is used, but ideally, it should be done every 6-12 months. To check if your marble needs resealing, you should sprinkle some water on the surface of your marble. If the liquid penetrates and stains the marble, it is high time to reseal it.
Clean Spills Immediately: Marble is sensitive to changes in the pH balance, and acidic products such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine and coffee may cause the marble surface to become dull. Accidental spills should be cleaned with a soft cloth or paper towel as soon as they are noticed. Just dab instead of rubbing to ensure that the liquid does not spread all over the surface. To clean the marble, use a stone cleaner with no acid content, or a gentle liquid dish soap and water mixture. Do not use any acidic or abrasive products that may scratch or wear out the surface of the utensils.
Daily Cleaning Routine: To maintain the floor, one should sweep the floor with a piece of cloth or mop gently daily. Dirt and sand can rub the surface and therefore, one has to clean the surface using a duster or broom frequently. It is recommended to use a damp microfiber cloth for cleaning because it can easily remove dirt and grime. These are mild and efficient in the sense that they are used for sweeping away dust and dirt.
Use Mats and Coasters: The holders for dishes and glasses, and the mats especially the ones placed under chafing dishes and hot plates. This helps in avoiding staining and etching of the surface of the food and beverage items that come into contact with the surface. In the washrooms, it is recommended to use trays for items such as those used in grooming like perfumes which can easily spill and cause staining of the surface.
Avoid Using Harsh Substances: Do not use any product that has lemon, vinegar or any other acidic solutions on your hair. These can scratch and leave a dull surface on the marble. It is also important not to use rough sponges or abrasive pads which can damage the marble surface.
Address Stains Properly: In case of a stain, the next course of action should be to take care of it immediately. Organic stains such as food, coffee or wine should be cleaned with a poultice of baking soda and water. Rub it to the stain, cover it with the plastic wrap and leave it for 24 to 48 hours before washing it. When it comes to oil-based stains, then it is recommended that you use a poultice that has been prepared with baking soda and acetone.
Maintain Humidity Levels: Maintain the humidity levels in your house at moderate levels. It should also be noted that moisture on marble is the source of mould and mildew stains, which is why bathrooms are particularly problematic for this material.
Regular Inspection: Check your marble surfaces regularly to identify any signs of fade, staining, or cracks. In my opinion, one of the major benefits of early detection is that it is easier to work on a problem before it gets out of hand.
